Has any one had experience overhauling the tilt and trim on a Yamaha 90HP. Mine is slowly bleeding off and the dealer said to replace the whole system at a cost of over 2,000.00. Is there a rebuild kit and how hard is it to rebuild? THanks

You did not say year model, but yes you can overhaul it. Mostly just o-rings. You will need to make a "spanner" wrench to remove the ends of the trim cylinder. Here is an example of a 90hp breakdown. web page

Trent, It's a 2002. If you have done this would you recommend a shade tree machinec attempt it? Why wouldn't the dealer suggegt an overhaul instead of replacement, except for the money? Dave

I dont know why that dealer does not want to do it? Its pretty simple too me unless its a saltwater engine and then you can really run into problems taking it apart. Just use a diagram/manual and take apart. Clean everything really good. Grease all o-rings with clean fluid and re-install.

Trent, I bought the boat used and it is used in salt water. The manual I got with the motor mentions nothing about being a salt water motor or fresh water. It's a model 90A motor. Any thoughts? Dave

What I meant was "saltwater engine" Too mean was it used in saltwater. You said, it was so it might be pretty tough to get it apart. You may have to use a torch to get some of the fastners loose. Give it a try... What do you have to loose but two grand?

Re: tilt and trim

Most of the genuine Yamaha service manuals have overhaul procedures for their tilt/trim systems. They are generally very detailed and easy to understand. I also have a Clymer manual which is useless when it comes to the tilt and trim. If it were me I would have a local dealer order you a manual or you could perhaps buy one online. Manuals can be purchased on the Yamaha website and you can often find them on Ebay for less $. Good luck! Let us know how the overhaul goes. I have the same bleed down problem you have. Also have a seal that's looking kinda bad.

Re: tilt and trim

I found a dealer that will overhaul the tilt and trim. He said it wouldn't be worth it because it's not that bad. If it goes out all together then get it fixed, but he said it wasn't likely that would happen. The other dealer who wanted 2,000 to replace it said they were afraid of contamination (DIRT) getting into the system. For the cost and down time I can push that tilt and trim switch a whole bunch of time for 2000.00. I'm going to let it go for now.
