1983 4.5 Hp. Tilt bolt incredibly expensive $49 for the bolt $5 for the nut $3 for the washer and $53 for the tension spring can this be right? Has anyone had to replaced a rusty worn down "tilt bolt"?
Can I replace with a SS bolt same size?

Thanks, Costy

Re: Tilt bolt

I have used a s/s bolt in the past. Not sure on the size, remove your old one and use it as a guide.

Re: Tilt bolt

They are expensive because they are not stock off-the-shelf parts. But can you use stock parts? Of course you can, if they are the right size. That little 4.5hp isn't going to stress it hard enough to require such a strong heat-treated bolt.

I don't think I've ever seen a spring that was beyond cleaning and re-use.

Re: Tilt bolt

I found a galvanized carriage bolt at Lowe's that was an exact match for my tilt bolt. My old tilt bolt was bent somehow. My motor is not the same as yours, but this is an example of using stock parts if it fits.

Neither had I, until I pulled my little 6R78B out of the trash on Bowen Island. The spring was completely fused with corrosion and the whole works was quite a job to remove. I used a shortened valve spring from a B&S lawn mower engine and a ss carriage bolt as a replacement. At least the fibre washers were still salvageable.
