5 liter outdrive. I drained what little oil and water that i found in it. I would like to remove the 4 bolts holding the sidewhere you add the oil to inspect inside. Is there alot i have to do to get that off or should it just come off with out prying involved? Aslo do i use oil or grease in there when i put it back on? thanks

You might need to pry a little but it's not hard to get off. When you put it back on, consider doubling up the gaskets so the shaft doesn't bind. I found buying gasket material and just cutting my own worked well.

The manual will tell you to fill it with 30w oil, but I prefer to stuff it full of marine grease as that box tends to leak a lot. Oil wont stay in & water won't stay out. Marine grease does a much better job of staying put & keeping water out.

The cover should come off with a little tapping/prying, but just a little. Be careful not to damage the o-ring groove when removing the cover. The 'gaskets' superbenk mentioned are not actually gaskets, but shims. The seal is created by the o-ring. The shims are to prevent over tightening of the cover and binding the clutch.

I still use oil in mine and only ever get a very small amount of water in there. (Boat is trailered) I usually change the oil at the end of the season, and sometimes again about half-way through if I have been using it a lot. I've been using it 5+ years and no troubles so far. Some members use grease instead of oil which is fine also, and if I were keeping my boat in a slip I would probably do it too.

Thanks for the info. I will try to pry it off again. I didnt get it off yet, i was afraid i would wreck something inside. Also is it easier with the out drive up, down, or dosn't matter?

I would do it with the drive down just in case of the off chance that something comes loose when you have the cover off and the drive comes slamming down, possibly on a body part. :D
