I was having a problem with the titl not working, I had someone come over from a local boat yard and he installed new relays, and harness, he hooked it directly to the battery to see if it was working, He said to add a fuse between the wires, as if you didn't it would cause a fire, I'm thinking I can keep it like it is, Wife says NO WAY, any expert advise would be good,

put an inline fuse on the postive wire near the battery, and you are good to go. that's the same way trolling motors are installed.

Just checked my Mercruiser service manual. The wiring diagram with a single relay shows a 40 amp fuse. The one with a double relay shows a 20 amp fuse. Check how many relays you've got, then fuse accordingly. I'd suggest you keep a spare set of fuses on board anyway. Good luck. Hy

Also you should install the in-line fuse no further than 12 inches from the battery this will minimize the chance of a fire due to a short or wires chaffing/melting together. The fuses are there to protect the battery more than the accessory, an un-fused short will build lots of heat fast and melt wires/cause a fire a inline fuse or circuit breaker will prevent you from having a great big problem down the road.
