I have a 50hp (top row 40ETLF) (Bottom row 6H4 L 557557) yamaha with tilt only, the tilt motor went out and I am looking to replace it. The serial on the motor and hydraulic unit is
MTO 2 and I found one from a 50hp that is
1L-0742. I was wondering if they are compatable. Oh, one other thing, i understand that by reversing the polarity on the two wires changes direction because i direct wired it to the battery. Now, there are two leads on the side of the motor that the two wires hook up to, when I have a multi-meter up to them and press the toggle to go one way, i should get a voltage difference when i toggle up and down. But i am only getting a voltage difference when i toggle up. Does this mean the pack is out too??

THanks,
ERic Burka

Re: tilt for 50hp

Eric,

I'm not sure about the compatibility. With the switch on the side of the motor I think this only switches positive. That is up switches the positive to one wire and down the other. These wires connect to a relay which then provides the correct polarity via two wires to the motor

Re: tilt for 50hp

The two wire motor requires the postive and negative to be reversed to reverse the direction of the motor. The relay assembly changes the polarity. If both motors are for a tilt, they should work. The differences between the 40 and 50 were in the powerhead. Sounds like the pack could be bad also.
