I have a 1985 merc. 50hp with T/T, and was wondering if the T/T would work if the tilt limit switch is not hooked up. I bought this motor and have found nothing but things wrong. This is just the latest. If it wount work with it disconnected can someone steer me in the direction to find a new one. thanks in advance.

Re: tilt limit switch

Yes guido that trim limit switch will keep the pump from running if the switch is defective. Find where the limit switch plugs into your wiring harness, unplug it and install a jumper wire to connect the two wires in your wiring harness where the switch used to plug in...this jumper wire will by-pass the switch and it should work. If not then the prob is elsewhere.

Hey Rip, follow your wires from the limit switch to your boat wiring harness. The limit switch should plug into the blue and the purple wire from your harness, put a jumper wire to connect the blue and purple wires from your main wiring harness. The brown wire you're speaking of may or may not have been used...my Merc manual shows a brown wire that is used to operate a trim POSITION GAUGE...if the boat came with a trim position gauge, which most all outboards do not have simply because you can visually see the position of an outboard from the Helm whereas you cannot if you have an outdrive with an inboard engine.
