Tilt motor issues

I am having the same issues again. I got the tilt motor to work some time ago and I went to test it today and nothing. All I heard was the relays clicking but no movement. Also, I seem to be getting some grounding somewhere because when I give the yellow/green wire power is sparks and gets hot instantly. Its for a volvo penta aq271 engine, 280 outdrive

What more do I need to check?

Thanks

Re: Tilt motor issues

That yellow/green wire is the ground signal for the drive NOT down and locked. Hope you didn't let the smoke out of the switch.

Here is the manual for your drive it has wiring diagrams in it for the tilt. You have two power feeds, the load circuit should be fused. If you are hearing the relays click the relay coil feed is probably fine.

Re: Tilt motor issues

I have it connected like diagram says. I have black and brown wires to the motor. The red to the positive side of starter and black to the engine block. The only thing left if the cable with connector with 3 wires, blue, brown, yellow/green.

If I give the blue and brown wires 12v the relays click. When I give the y/gn with either blue or brown its sparks and gets hot. Nothing happens if I ground them. What am I missing?

How many wires does your motor have? 2 or 4?

Re: Tilt motor issues

Here is the wiring diagram in color. If you put power to the blue or brown wires, it should make the relays click, that is what it's supposed to do. If you put power to the Grn/Y wire it will spark, you are creating a short. the grn/y is a ground.

Disconnect the black and brown wires from the motor. With a couple of jumper wires, wire the motor directly to the battery and see if it runs. reverse the hot and ground and the motor will reverse.

Re: Tilt motor issues

The motor works if I connect it directly to battery. Thanks for help don. So what connects to gn/y wire then?

Re: Tilt motor issues

The grn/y wire is only for the light next to your switch, nothing else.

Try this, disconnect the wires from the motor again, now connect a test light between the brown and black wires (Relay side, not the motor wires) and hit the operate the tilt switch up and down. Did the test light light up? If not, you could have a bad relay or a wiring problem.
Don't forget, it takes both relays working to go either direction. It's not one is used for up and one for down. One is used for positive, one is used for negative. Which one does what depends on which direction you go.

Re: Tilt motor issues

I am testing it now and before hitting the switch, it's lighting up the light. Is it supposed to do that or only light up when switch is depressed?

Test light, lights up when I press the switch down not when I press up.

Re: Tilt motor issues

Is the drive all the way up? If so, Manually just push the drive down a little ways and see if the test light works for up.

Re: Tilt motor issues

Disconnected wire at shifter caused up to not click. Now both click when I press switch but nothing happens. I only get voltage when I press down, but not up even though it clicks. I changed one relay but same symptoms

Test light does not light up in your test of black and brown at relay

At the motor. Hook the test light to the wires going to the motor, not at the relays.

Post a picture of your motor and relay box.

Re: Tilt motor issues

I figured it out. The problem was at the starter. It wasn't sending the 12v the motor needed. Thanks
