The tilt n trim sender unit on my 200 Johnson (J200STLETC) is bad. In figuring that out there is a bare grounding wire attached to one of the sender mounting bolts, hoevever it has been broken or cut at some point. Where does it attach? I have the service manual but unable to figure out where it attaches.

Same motor. The motor is "juddering or jumping" when near end of down travel, shaking the transom. Earlier post said possible pivot point too tight or needs lube. Here is the problem. The alemite (grease) fittings are right behind the rod that is part of the hydralic power steering, I have no power steering pump with a belt, so I'm assuming it's an "add on" steerring unit. If you tilt the motor, the grease nipples rollup with the motor so still be pretty much impossible to get a grease gun on it. Am I missing something?

Any help appreciated, as always.

Ground wire on the trim sender really doesn't do anything, the two wires that are potted into the sending unit are all that matter.

I can't be of much help on the other question as I'm not familiar with hydraulic power steering (can't even understand why it's needed on an outboard), but IMHO I'd be taking something apart to get that thing lubed.

If you are speaking of the sender for the gauge, the sender has two wires which run to the relay box and connect to the posts there. The sender is variable resistance and the ground is necessary to complete the circuit; the gauge gets the positive voltage from the ignition switch. It's much like the one shown here: http://www.maxrules.com/graphics/omc_pics/T&Twiring.gif

Thanks. Thought the ground may be unimportant, figure it must go to the motor somewhere. I'll find it.

Regarding the grease points on the pivot, I'm with you. Because of where they are I reckon they may never have been lubed. Dis-assembly time unless someone knows of a "right angle" grease gun.

I grounded the disconnected wire to the engine block. No difference. put a on ohm meter (multimeter) on the sensor and could not get a reading per the resistance specified in the OMC manual as I moved it Hence I'm assuming the sensor is bad.

I think the ground for this sensor is thru the mounting bolts???

Before you write it off, look at the diagram. Both wires are needed to complete the cirrcuit: one is ground the other runs to the gauge. Neither the sender nor the gauge is necessary for proper function of the PT&T.

OK I see what you are saying, I'll take another look at it.

Thanks a bunch!

I'm pretty sure the original post was talking about a third, green grounding wire which is included with some trim sending units and not others. That one does nothing. Yes, both wires to the potentiometer inside the sending unit are of course needed for it to function.
