Tilt needs a hand to raise on OMC 800

[Boat Racer]

1983 Century boat <br />800 OMC drive<br />Chevy 350 engine<br />the tilt lowers great but going up is tough<br />sometimes you have to keep clicking the switch or have a second person help it lift the unit for transport. Does the motor need work? Can they be rebuilt? Are they expensive? Thanks for the help.

Boat Racer, check the outdrive that it is free.you can remove the three bolts on the half moon gear on the left side, there are grease zerks under the rubber bumpers.check the little gear case that it has 30 weight oil.check for loose connections and corosion. I rebuilt mine, you have to sodder the new brushs in.I have the part # for a 1984 model if you need them. my .02 cents.

I forgot to mention that if the gear box cover bolts are tight it will not lift without help. The bolts must be just barely snug and silcone the cover good.

Boat Racer<br />I agree with Butch. My motor did the same thing years ago. I greased outdrive pivots every year but still got where it would go up 3 inches and stop. If tried again another 3 inches. I unbolted pivots took bearing sleeves off and cleaned annd greased then put back on. Now goes all the way us in 3 seconds. All the way down takes 1/4 sec on switch.<br /><br />Tilt clutch should have motor oil in it, 30 weight. Drain on bottom, level port side.<br /><br />Outdrive heavy so if take off like I did put something under skeg and raise front of trailer until snug then unbolt and let rest on skeg.

It didn't have a gasket when I got it. It was siliconed. By leaving it some what loose it makes it turn on the bearing in the gear box easier. I wonder if a gasket would act like a shim to help it turn easier.

Boat Racer<br />My unit has both a 0 ring and regular gasket for the cover.

Boat...<br />Make sure your battery is fully charged. My outdrive did same thing at beginning of last season, until battery was up to snuff.
