Tilt on my 1977 115 quit

Well I can't say it completely quit, but it will not lift the motor anymore. We were out fishing and lifted the motor a couple times with no problem, then it just stopped lifting. It would lift the motor a couple of inches and just stop, like it was at the top of the cylinder. Could someone help me figure that out?

Have you checked the fluid level?
Does the motor sound any different when it stops lifting?
