tilt pin question

Hi I have a simple question. I have a 84 Mercury 115 with trim/tilt. I noticed the trim pin fell out onto the ground at the boat landing. Which hole does it go in? I can't put it in the hole closest to the hull because it would interfere with the operation. I tried the next hole up but it was tilted to much. I used it yesterday without it and it seemed fine. But it had to come from somewhere. I don't want to damage anything by not using it. Any advice?
