Tilt problem with Johnson 225

I'm in the process of storing my boat and when I went to tilt the motor up to put it on the support lever, it made a bit of a grinding noise and only went up a few inches. The tilt motor would run but the motor wouldn't budge. I put the batteries on a charger thinking that might be the problem but it didn't help. Any ideas? There's plenty of trim/tilt fluid in it.
Thanks for any help!

DOH! It's a 1997 with about 400 hours on it. Don't know much about it since I purchased it only a few months ago.

Re: Tilt problem with Johnson 225

Chris, Those PTT units need to be filled when the motor is all the way up. Can you lift it manually while running the motor in the up direction? If so, you can try that if the manual release doesnt work. When you get it up, lock it in place with the manual lock. Now remove the PTT resevoir plug (boat level) let the motor sit a few minutes and fill with ATF. Cycle it down and up (help the PTT unit, by using your muscles). Let her sit a few minutes and refill the PTT unit. Repeat as is necessary to get all the air out of the PTT unit.

I do not like that you reported grinding. I hope it gets better. If not, there are probably aftermarket PTT motors from ARCO or someone.

When it started to bog down, I tried to help it along by lifting up on the motor but it didn't help any. The grinding starts when I start to tilt it up, then goes away, then starts up again. I'll try tilting it up and down manually a few times and topping off the fluid level. Thanks for your help guys!
