tilt problem

I have a 1985 5.7l. OMC I/O.

When I try to tilt the stern drive up I have to hit the up position on the up/down switch 4 or 5 times (sometimes more) before it starts to move. Once it starts to move its OK. It usually goes down as soon as I hit the down position of the switch.

Any ideas?

Re: tilt problem

Pop the black bumpers off the drive and grease the trunnion pivot points, grease them real good until you start to see grease sqeeze out. There are zerk fittings under the bumpers. This is where I would start, if it doing it after you grease them then I would start checking connections, switches and solenoids.

Re: tilt problem

this is a quite commom problem with these drives...i have twins, both do as yours does, both have newer motors, good connections, and pivot points are well greased.......if you can figure out how to make these drives come up with first try...let me know...otherwise, live with the problem....at least it still comes up...this was a poor system when new...let alone 20 years later

Re: tilt problem

I had same problem. First what I did was drain the tilt box and fill it with marine grease (advice of a mechanic) as water kept getting in. I greased the pivots and even put some grease on the tilt gear. Ever since ( few years ago)I never had a problem. I grease the pivots before and after each season.

Re: tilt problem

also clean all relay connections and wire terminals (both sides) with a file until shiny. then add a second shim to each clutch cover.
