Re: Tilt Problem

Does the click come from under the engine cover? Have someone trigger the switch and listen for the click. This should lead you to a relay that controls the trim motor. You can try tapping gently on the relay, or remove it and check and clean the electrical connections. This is the way my Merc. is set up, and I have heard that this trick will work on other brands, but no guarantees!
Pat in MD

Re: Tilt Problem

My OMC did that also. turned out to be the tilt motor, $140. It wouldn't hurt to remove the little motor and have it checked at a local auto parts store. I had mine checked out on their little starter tester machine. Of course most any alternator/starter shop should be able to do the same test.

Al...

Re: Tilt Problem

Thanks everyone for your help. will look into your suggestions this weekend. now that i think of it, also sometimes when i hit the "Trim" switch, it takes three or four trys until anything will happen, so maybe it is bad connections. I will try all of your suggestions first. i hope something works, i would rather have the wife leave me, instead of my boat being down ! Thanks again ~

Re: Tilt Problem

I have a 80 serries 400 OMC. Like others I would check the battery first or see if stater turns motor over. Make sure tilt clutch is full of 30 wt motor oil not water. When is last time you greased the out drive tilt pins. Problem I had with mine was even though I greesed the out drive tilt pins ever 6 month the greese really did not get all the way around. I removed the tilt pin caps and cleaned out all the old greese put in new and it has been fine every since. Before was so stiff little tilt motor could barely move it.

Re: Tilt Problem

Bare with me here. i just ordered a chilton manuel on the engine and outdrive. is the clutch at the end of the screw drive ? if so, i took those 4 bolts loose and the cover wouldnt come off, so i checked the oil and it was real light cream colored ! looks light water has been in there for awhile. how do i remove the clutch plate ? also the tilt pins, i think what your talking about i removed those 2 covers all i saw was rust ! no grease at all ! are the tilt pins where the 2 rubbers are to stop the outdrive going down ? also, theres kind of a small crack between the rubbers and the covers of the tilt pin covers, like its bound up and pushing out on the covers ! the covers on the clutch plate and the tilt pins, should they be sealed with something just like you would an oil pan ? what kind of grease for the tilt pins ? and what kind of oil for the clutch plate, upper unit, lower unit should i use ?... Thanks everyone for all the help, I'm realy getting somewhere finally ! I'll get the boat manuel today and will understand these ares your talking about. THANKS AGAIN ~

Re: Tilt Problem

Let's start with the tilt clutch. It is on the port side of the outdrive. On the outdrive side of clutch has a small gear that drives the big gear that tilts outdrive. Other side has 4 screws and a fill plug. The clutch should be filed with 4 cycle engine oil. If it is milky it has water in it. I had trouble geting it open also. Take out the 4 bolts and see if can get a screw driver in a crack. Also can tap or gear side and see can push it open. The unit has two seals behind gear. The side with the 4 bolts has a o ring seal. You might try just draining oil and refill first.
The tilt pins where I think your problem is are in front of the two rubber stops that stop outdrive from turning too far. Pull the two rubber stops off and you will see a zert greese fitting and two bolts. Take the bolts out and pull outdrive away. carefull it is heavy. When you get that off there is a bearing with holes in it for greese. I took that off and cleaned then regreased. While you have it off make sure tilt gear is not engauged and hit switch to raise and lower. Should work fine. If it does not then must figure if bound up or electrical problem. You can remove motor inside and try tilt switch again. At this point can turn motor shaft and see if bound up. One last thing if take tilt clutch apart be carefull it has many shimms inside. If it is getting water in it will want to replace seals. Water can get in from two seals on the gear side, oring on the 4 bolt side or from the motor shaft inside. Tilt pins grease with omc triple guard grease. Upper, lower gearcase and intermediate housing use OMC Hi-VIS GEARCASE LUBE or can use the new ultra HPF. Good luck and let us know what you find.

Re: Tilt Problem

Boatist, wow alot of info ! THANKS ! i got my manuel and will start reading it. last night i pulled the seats and engine cover out of the boat. started looking at the big picture, what a mess ! i found a 50 amp fuse in the glove box (just bought the boat a few days ago) and started looking for a place on the motor for the fuse. i found 2 50 amp fuse holders by the starter. checked the 2 fuses and one was bad, replaced it with the fuse from the glove box. hit the tilt button and man did i get a big smile on my face when that tilt went down to the ground !!!!! told the old lady "SEE YA".... THANKS ! but still i will start tonight on sealing & new oil in the clutch. also greasing the tilt pins and changing the oil in upper & lower units. i will put new seals on everything i can find. very new at this boating stuff and wanta say thanks again for all your help....

Re: Tilt Problem

Way to Go can not fix it cheaper than that. I carry two 50 amp fuses in my tool/parts box on board. If one of them blows motor will not run. Thanks for letting us know the fix.
