my omc drive is stuck in the down position, when i use the tilt button all i hear is a click. i removed the tilt motor and ran power straight to it from the battery and it worked. connected it back to the harness and used the tilt button again and it worked . when i mounted it back to the drive and tried the button again all i heard was a clicking noise again. i bumped each solinoid big bolt to big bolt i heard the tilt motor click as if it was trying to work but the wires stuck to solinoid and got hot. any suggestions please

If the Motor Works,.....
I would guess that something Down-stream is Binding......

Pull the quadrant gear off and try lifting the drive- the pivot bearings could be seizing up.Tilt clutch housing could be full of water and rust too - you could take the tilt clutch cover off and see how things look in there. Motor could be on it's way out. works with no load, but no good with load....sometimes motors will spin with no load even if the brushes are toast....or the bushings are shot.. did it sound smooth?

the motor sounded very smooth, the tilt clutch housing had a small amount of water in it but not alot. can you explain to me where exactly is the quardrant gear located. one other thing theres an oil input on the transome plate is this where the oil for the tilt clutch goes. i had a volvo before and i have never seen an oil fill on the transome, thank god for the forum.

Why don't you get a service manual so you at least know what things are called when you ask questions.
Not everything can be done on the internet. Sometimes you have to read, study, and understand how things work so you can work on them. Otherwise you won't even know if you are doing something right or wrong when you do work on it.

You need to do a torque test on the motor. The manual explains how to do all that.

The motor could work well unloaded but comprimised brushes and commutators will render it weak under load. You should dissassemble the motor and check it. Cut and clean the commutator paying attention to the grooves. Use brake cleaner to clean it then give it a flush with electronic cleaner.

My money's on poor electrical connections on the solenoids or cables. Most likely corroded.
