I have a 1977 150hp mercury with power tilt. When I hook up the wires to the battery the motor starts raising without operating the switch! But it will not go back down using the switch or even if I switch the wires. It is almost to the point to where the motor is going to hit the body of the boat. Need HELP please. Can't find the release screw

I'm just guessing but should look something like this. See arrow on pic.

Good Luck

Re: tilt problems

OK, sounds like up solenoid is stuck , or switch is bad providing voltage to solenoid all the time. Disconnect round plug on PTT pump and reconnect battery wires to PTT pump. If motor runs, solenoid is bad. If motor does not run, switch is bad.

The only way to lower motor is to loosen smaller hydraulic lines at pump. Oil will spray out and motor will lower.
