I have a 97 VIP w/ mercruiser 4cyl. I have had a water in tilt oil problem that I think I have traced to the vent hole in the top of the cap. The tilt anf trim has always been fine but this year the trim pump comes on like it should but the lift is usually very slow to not at all.......then sometimes it works fine.

Down seems to work fine.

You can lift the unit by hand and it is hard but will come up with my help and someone on the switch.

Battery is new. 30 wt oil is stilla little milky after 4 changes.

Tomorrow I will tear into the pump unit for a good cleaning. Anything I should look for specifically? What are your thoughts on the problem?

Thanks in advance for your response.

Ayuh,.....

Those pumps are built to pump Oil,.... Not Water.....
With Fresh Oil,... It should pump,....
If it Doesn't,... My Guess is,... It's been damaged by the Water......

A Replacement Pump might be where you've got to Go.....

Re: Tilt pump works but no lift-97 VIP Mercruiser

I had sucked the oil out put fresh oil in it...still no lift....buuut

When I pulled the plastic tank off I found at least 1/4 inch of goo (milky white REAL thick stuff) in the bottom as well as the same stuff on the filter screens. Some carb cleaner and a real good cleaning of the tank and the problem was fixed.

Now if I can just get all the water out of the system. About 5 full changes so far and there is still water in the system. Any ideas on how to flush it better?

Thanks

Jay

Take the lines off the pump, aim them into a container, and raise the drive up and down by hand several times. This will get most of the watery oil out of the cylinders, (not all, only most) Then take the reservor off the pump and clean it out. Put new oil in, and run the pump without the lines and purge the milky oil out of the pump. Hook it back up, and disconnect the lines from the trim rams and run the pump both ways to flush the lines. Hook it back up and refill and run up and down. Should be real close to perfect.

Thanks to everyone on this thread, this helped me alot, I had the same thing happen, tilt worked well when I put the boat away, spring time it moved very slow, then not at all, I pulled the reservoir out and cleaned algae (if you can believe it) out of the bottom and refilled new oil and all is well, thanks, Al.
