I am pretty new to boating and have a question about tilt.
Should I always leave it all the way down except for when loading and unloading and just use the trim when i am on the water?

Re: Tilt question

Tilt is for trailering and shallow water/poling. Trim is for less drag under way.

Re: Tilt question

What kind of engine?
Sterndrives you raise it for the trailer ride, lower it for storage.
Outboards can be left raised at the dock or on the trailer. Although I'd lower the motor so it can't trap water, when down they will normally drain out. Also you'd be less likely whack into the lower unit if the motor is down.
All boats raise it for loading & unloading from the trailer.
Underway you go full-down for takeoffs, raise slightly once on plane to lift the boat's bow and thereby lower friction. This allows the boat to operate using less fuel and reach higher speeds.

Re: Tilt question

What boat and motor do you have?

General operation would be to have it trimmed all the way down till you're up on plane, then trim it up just until it starts to porpoise then adjust it slightly down a bit.
