Tilt rebuilt, still attached to motor?

I haven't gotten too terribly far into this project, but I need to rebuild the tilt cylinder on my 88 Force 125. The problem is, I'm having a heck of a time removing the lower trim mount shaft, which means I cannot remove the tilt cylinder completely. Can I rebuild it while it is still attached to the motor? I can remove the upper shaft, but not the lower. Any suggestions?
