Tilt System Fluid/Oil???

I have a 94' Force 70 hp. One of the lines came loose and I lost the fluid from the hydraulic and the pump. What fluid should I refill with? My force manual says Quicksilver tilt fluid but also lists regular motor oil. The fluid that leaked out was a green hydraulic fluid. Any suggestions of what to use?

Also, I believe the built in gas tank needs to be cleaned out. Any suggestions on this? I failed to winterize the boat as I should and am in the process of getting ready for some warm weather. (I won't let it happen again! lol)

Thanks!

Re: Tilt System Fluid/Oil???

you have to match the existing fluid.

Most hydraulic systems engineers do the bulk of their work for heavy equipment and industry. Because of this, most systems are designed for ISO standard hydraulic oil. However, ATF is cheaper and Mercury is a super cheap-*** company. As long as the engine lasts warranty plus 1 day then they don't care. There is no need to spend an extra nickle if all it does is make something last 30 years instead of 12. The warranty is over by 12 years anyway.

So, if your fluid was red then use ATF. If it was honey colored then use hydraulic oil.

This does not apply to engines made before Darth Mercury took over. Prior to Merc, always use non-detergent oil based fluids.

Thanks. That's what I was planning on using. I have another question while on the topic:

The wire leading to the tilt/trim pump is in rough shape. It definitely needs to be replaced and re-sealed at the top of the setup. I was wondering if I could disassemble it and rewire it without fear of damaging the pump. They are too pricey for me to take this lightly!

worry about the seal more than the insulation. The top of the pump including the wire entry needs to be 110% waterproof. All other concerns are of secondary importance. If you replace the wire then you may be ruining a good seal between grommet and cable.
