Well hello all. I have my first question of the year as I am trying to get an early start before the season begins. Here is my problem, last year at the end of the season everything worked fine, now this year I have 2 fresh batteries and the tilt/trim motor does not work. It worked the klast day i used it before seasons end. All I hear are the 2 relays in the back clicking when I push the up/down switch and thats it. I pulled off the cover for the relay pack and everything looked fine. I disconnect the connector that comes out of the box (green and blue wires) and metered them coming out of the relay while the switch was being pressed. Voltage was good in both directions. On the motor side of the connector I tried applying direct voltage to see if I can hear the motor turn or at least click and nada. Is it possable for the motor to die just from sitting out a winter? Just dosent make sense. I checked the wires and did not find any fusable links unless there is one sitting in the sleeve that travels under the hood?

On top of that I need to replase the prop shaft seals along with a few otheres as some water was getting in the lower unit last year. Does anyone know where I can get that special puller from to pull that metal piece out that is holding the shaft and seals together?

Thank you for all of your help.

Somewhere in essence in your post, I believe that you're saying that you've applied 12 volts to the two wires that lead to the PTT motor.... negative to green and positive to blue, or vice verse, it makes no difference as one way makes the motor run in one direction, reverse the wires and the motor runs in the opposite direction.

If this is the case, and the PTT did not attempt to run, it's possible that the PTT electric motor brushes have simply taken a set on ther armature, that is a dirty set whereas one brush is not making proper contact.

With the engine manually tilted to its extreme up position and securely locked, and with the battery jumper wires attached to the PTT electric moror wires, tap that electric motor somewhat with a hammer. That usually cures that type problem. Let us know what you find there.

That metal piece, if you're speaking of the "Carrier Assembly" that houses the propeller shaft, the special puller can be purchased from Bob Kerr Tools in Orlando, Fl.

Well did the hammer trick and still nothing. Just seems strange that it would go just from sitting.

If thats the case and I get a new motor, do I have to pull the whole T/T unit out, can this be completed without removing the motor?

Thank you for the ingformation on the puller as well.

I'm assuming that you did have proper jumper wires (two) leading from a good battery to both of the PTT electric motor wires, not to one wire of the PTT motor with the other jumper going to ground.

If so, and there was no spark, and repeated blows of the hammer did nothing, then yes I would think that the electric motor has a flaw of some kind.

To remove the electric motor, the PTT unit must be removed from the engine. The alternative is to remove the outboard engine from the boat.
