Tilt & Trim and a shock

The last time I took out my 79 arrowglass johnson 100 I went to lift the motor when taking it out of the water, but would not go up. When pressing button to lift it up, you can hear the motor trying to pull it up, but goes no where. Any ideas? Also when the motor was running if you touched the engine cover you would get shocked (or bit). Is this just a bad ground or need to clean up the wires and connections?

If you have a short somewhere that's causing you to get shocked, it also might be taking power away from your trim. I've never heard of being shocked by touching the engine cover. There's some smart people on this forum that can probably help.

Best of luck!!

the cover on a 79 johnson is fiberglass, and not an electrical conductor, touch the locks, can carry current if something is shorting out, but your body would have to be grounded to the engine. are you sure it wasn't static electricity. i'd check all the wiring, for knicks, and burnt insulation. also the seals in the cylinders could be bad. what have you done to trouble shoot.

Ill look at the wiring to check for cuts and knicks. For the hydros I thought maybe I had a bad connection on the battery because that had happend once, but it was fine. Then I thought maybe they had locked up so I tried to lube it with some silicone spray, but still nothing. Like I said Ill have to check the wiring to the hydros and all of the others too

have someone activate the switch, and lift up on the motor at the same time. just a thought.

The Latch Locating Brckets on the inside of the Upper V4 Covers in 1979 were very large aluminum blocks, around 4" square and extending in almost 2 inches if I remember correctly.

They are very close to the spark plugs and, depending on how your wires are set, can easily pick up the full charge. Believe me, you don't have to be well grounded to appreciate the power.

you might be low on fluid,,as mentioned, lift and push up button ,then check the resevoir for fluid,it should be filled til it oveflows, run up and down a few times to get air out and insure its full, it is the unit opposit the motor, starbord side, large slotted screw,if you cant get it to lift, you can use manual relief, its found same side as the res. you will see a small slotted screw thru the engine mounting bracket, the screw DOES NOT come out, just loosen,as for the shock,I agree with ezeke, about the only thing that could give a good jolt is a leaking plug wire ,if the cover has moisture on it,the leaking sprk can travel
