I have a 1980 50 H.P. w/ PT&T and a guy wants to trade for a 1979 80 H.P. w/o PT&T.
Obviously the guy wants the PT&T to stay w/ the 50 Horse, my question is
with regards to the 80 Horse. Is it possible/difficult to convert the 80 to
PT&T??
The 80 looks to be in pristine condition. I'm gonna do a compression test
and hopefully be able to run it before following through with the deal, but
if I can't convert it to PT&T I will reluctantly pass on the offer.
Thanx in advance for any input/advice.

The 79 80hp will need the 2 external ram cylinders and trim pump that mounts in boat and 4 hoses...

OK, I have that, only problem is the switches (trim in/out & trailer) are in the
handle of the controls from a 60 HP Merc that I also have. (it's a 1984 but
the PT&T looks like it was 'scabbed' on ) It has the 2 rams & the
external pump mounted in the boat.:)
Is it (relatively) easy to take off the "shocks" on the 80 HP and fit it into
the PT&T bracket from the 60HP??
The controls for the 80 HP are quite different from the 60's controls,
and there isn't any trim/tilt switches in the control box.:(

Do you have a pic of your PTT unit? Most parts are readily available on EBay.

Re: Tilt/Trim Conversion

Cyber, I am not sure the 50HP transom bracket and the 80HP transom bracket are the same. You might measure the two triple clamps and see if they are the same. If so, then measure the space between the shock mounts on the 80HP motor, and the lower shock mount and the place the PTT bracket bolts on(it is where the upper shock mount would have bolted on). If they match as well, the PTT will likely fit.

To control the PTT unit you need 2 waterproof heavy duty push buttons, that you can mount on the dash.
