Can anyone furnish me with an early 70's 80hp Mercury tilt/trim pump diagram for the valve body/gear assembly and the control valve assembly. My local service man says that there are no servicable parts but I just have to give it a try and at least clean it out throughly. The engine has two trim cylinders and the pump has one solenoid. I want to be sure every check ball and spring is back in it's right place before mounting. Thanks.

Have you considered a Service Manual, John?

Re: tilt/trim diagram

I tried to find one of these diagrams too with no success, however once I opened it up there was not much you con get wrong when you put it back together :) Just FYI I pulled the pump all apart for nothing the problem turned out to be in the cylinders even if only one cylinder is shot the system will not work, you wont even here the pump load up and try to work... that's what got me :D
The O-ring sets are cheap and easy to install, if you go this route post back and I will explain how to get the slipper seals in without the tool...
Jon

John, From what I have been told, there are no replacement parts. I have also never seen an exploded diagram. I took mine apart one time, but since I coudn't figure out how it worked, it was tough to see if it was working. I ended up buying a replacement, although I think it was working OK.

If your motor is not holding trim up position it may be due to a bad piston seal in one cylinder or the other. There are replacement/rebuild kits for the cylinders, but you need a special tool to install the piston into the liner.

Thanks for the replys. I'll reassemble and try it out. When I manually raised the motor the fluid would squirt out of the reservoir so I assumed the cylinders are working. Was a lot of crud from the humidity in Florida in all the passageways.
Thanks again.

Quote "When I manually raised the motor the fluid would squirt out of the reservoir"
No this does not mean your cylinders are ok... I could not lift my OB with the reverse lock enguaged yet the seals were totaly shot. I even rebuilt one cylinder thinking that I would at least here the pump load up if it was working and it didn't even moan but as soon as I rebuilt the other cylinder it worked like a charm...
Jon
