My 1988 140 hp motor is stuck in the up position. It worked before, but when I raised the motor, it wouldn't come down. When I push the button, it doesn't make any noise on the down side. I can push up and it whines. Any suggestions? thanks:confused:

There is a manual relief valve on the back of the unit itself. It looks like a big flathead screwdriver slot that sticks out a little. Turn that to see if it bleeds off.

The motor is getting power, because it is making a noise when you attempt to raise it. It's cheaper to replace the manual relief valve than it is to replace the whole unit.

Probably the down relay or control switch. Mine had that problem once, it was the relay.

Switch the relays. If the problem is now the opposite (goes down but not up), one of the relays is faulty.

Where is the relay? I have a manual, but didn't read anything about relays. Is it on the motor?

Trace the PTT electric motor wires back to its connector. That wire leads to a plastic box that contains the relays etc. It's usually attached to the powerhead.

Thanks... got it and got the motor going back up and down.... also got the lower unit gear oil changed today.... put the console in, leaning post and alot of other stuff... just gotta bite the bullet and clean the carbs to see if I can get this thing to idle and run so I can take it out next week... any ideas on the carbs? can I do it without buying carb kits?

Cleaning the carbs and not putting in new kits is worse than taking a shower and putting your old clothes back on - you're still dirty. The life blood (oil) of the motor flows thru the carbs. Are you sure you want to chance oil not getting to a particular cylinder?
