Tilt/trim fill question?

My son left his boat here at the house, and as it has been too windy this spring to go outside much with my 25 footer, I am thinking about using his boat and fishing the inlets and ICW. He has a 17 foot Dixie with a Evenrude 90Hp V-4 VRO. As I only have manuals for the 40hp on my skif, and for the 5.0L OMC stern drive's on my big boat, I don't have a clue about his engine.

How do I check the oil on his tilt/trim. Where is the fill plug and where is the release screw. Oh yeah what king of hydralic oil do I use. The engine is an 1985 or 86.

Re: Tilt/trim fill question?

I don't know what the big secret is. I went to the Marina and bought a tube of genuine Johnson/Evenrude Tilt/Trim Oil at the store for $3.99.

I needed some snaps to replace some missing one's on the canvas and boat. That gave me the excuse to wander down to the shop to get them, and while there I asked one of the mechanics about the proper way to fill the tilt/trim. He said it should be checked and topped off in the full up position. That if it didn't have enough oil to go up all the way to add some, replace the plug, run it all the way down, then back up as far as it would go. Keep repeating this untill it was all the way up and top it off if needed.
