1991 20' Lowe pontoon with same year Johnson 40 hp. Last fall I charged all the batteries and throughout the winter I'd walk by the and hit the trim up / dwn switch on the motor to check charge. This spring I was getting ready to start it with muffs on and the Battery was DEAD. I charged it and started fine. I continued to check the tilt trim until at motor until this weekend when I finally got it in the water and all worked fine.
Boat worked great this weekend. But when I was locking the boat down all of a sudden the motor started trimming down, with NO ONE in the boat and stayed trimming down. I hit the trim up switch on the shift lever and motor trimmed up, but as soon as I let go of the thumb switch it started trimming down and would not stop. I went to the motor to work that switch and I got it to trim up. So now we are sticking in trim up and when I switch the thumb switch trim down on the shift lever the trim motor just stops waiting for instructions. I let the trim down button go and it starts trimming up and won't stop. So I disconnected the Battery till next weekend.
Obviously I realize I'm going to have to go thru some wiring. But could it just be at one of the switches? Would some spray contact cleaner do the trick? Anyone else encounter something like this and what did you find out was wrong? Any places to check out BEFORE I tear into the wiring? Thanks
