Re: tilt/trim guage reads nothing

Howdy,

The trim gage system is fairly simple if you understand that it's just a variable resistor, gage and power source (12v battery) (all connected in series).

The trim sender (resistor) is connected at one end directly to ground.

The other (usually the "wiper") side of the sender goes directly to the gage connection.

There's 2 connections on the gage, + (plus) and - (minus)

12v goes to the (plus) + side and - (minus) should go to the wire from the sender (resistor)

movement of the sender should produce gage movement if there 12v on the plus side.

If there's a open circuit anyplace, the gage will not move. This includes the ground connection of either the sender at the drive end or the battery /main ground connections.

A failure can occur in the sender (open circuit.......test it with a simple multi-meter using the OHMs setting The resistance should vary when moving the drive up and down...(.or if you have it removed and are moving it by hand...)

The gage could also be faulty.

There might not be 12v present at the gage. Measure that with the multi-meter (SELECT VOLTS first!!!)

A little troubleshooting will find the problem quickly....

Cheers,

Rick

Ayuh,... Take it out of the dash, 'n give it the "Float Test"....

When it Fails,..
Find a more useful gauge to replace it with,...
Like an Hourmeter or somethin'....

that would be the trim limit switch you are looking at

the trim sender is on the starboard side of the gimbal ring, check your wires there
