I just got a new boat yesterday (78 Crestliner) with a 70 Johnson of about the same age. The trim wants to work...you can hear it whine when I hit the switch but not much happens. The rams move but it's like they don't catch on something. Fluid? Need the line bled? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Look at the side lower portion of the starboard transom bracket. There should be a hole there that is an access port to the manual release valve. Back that valve out two turns only, no more than two turns.

Lift the engine to it's extreme tilted up position and lock it there.

On the starboard back portion of the PTT assembly, you'll see a large slotted screw. This is the fill plug hole for the PTT fluid. Remove it and be carefull not to lose the sealing O Ring in back of it.

Fill the reservoir with the proper PTT fluid. Reinstall the fill screw and O ring, then tighten the manual release valve. The unit is self bleeding so you don'e need to bother with that aspect of the job.

You may need to repeat the tilt up and fill procedure depending on whether the unit is completely out of fluid, etc...... that is, if lack of fluid is your problem. Let us know what you find.

Wel let me start by saying thanks you for a prompt return. I will try that. I know where the release is because that's the only way I can put the motor down. Anyway, still trying to clean it out and see what needs to be done. Wiring and such. Took it out last night and was in such a hurry I for got to unhook the winch and safety chain....and put in the plug. Started taking on a lot of water and I wondered why it wouldn't plane with a 70horse on a 16foot boat! It was because I had half a lake in the boat with me. Hopefully your suggestion works and I don't have to be on the forum anymore. Just kidding. It is a great place for info and I truly appreciate it. Thanks

well I put fluid in and hit the switch and all was right with the world again! Does anyone know how to rig a 70 horse to a 6 as a kicker? I've got a plate to mount it but I don't feel like steering with the tiller when trolling. thanks again guys
