So I looked it over and the tilt position and trim limit wires are routed through the transom with a two bolt plate that I can't access without, it seems, removing the drive and bell housing. Any one know of a simple method Im' not thinking of? I've used every wrench and extension and knuckles I have. Even if I got the bolts off I dont' think I could get them back on. I have some tools and mech. knowledge. Im' not sure if I should tackle a drive removal. I dont' have the $ to pay the shop right now. Please let me know if there is a simpler way. Would the boat be fine on the water till winter if I disconnect them? Seems like they werent'' functioning anyway. 1976 Mercruiser on 165 HP inline 6 cyl ....(earlier I accidentally signed in as guest, sorry about the new post)

Yes. You need a short-as-possible 7/16 swivel socket with 1/4" drive. You also need a very long 1/4" extension and a ratchet. You'll also need magic fingers to get the screws back in. One of those long cable syringe-sorta things with grabbers that open when you push. And all the patience in the world. But it can be done. When you crank the drive all the way to the left and trim it all the way down, you can get to them that way.

I want to know more. I've been told that on the alpha drives, the engine would have to be removed to replace the trim and tilt sensor wires because of where the wires enter the transom. This not true Willy?

No, you don't have to pull the engine.

Trim sender/limit switch Installation Instructions

I gave up trying to do it without pulling the drive, took longer than doing it properly. Of courser I can pull the drive, bellhousing and bellows off the transom shield and put it back on in half an hour.

:$,lol, o.k. master, 30 minutes to remove and reinstall the drive, i bow to you. What's the secret to removing the hinge pins on the bell housing?

Ok, so Master screwed up (again) I was thinking the screw in type pivot pins. But even with the pins and aluminum nails and some heat they come apart fairly easy. Stuborn ones get heated, then driven inward with an air hammer. Makes quick work of removing. A little clean up and grease and your ready to go.

Thanks for the pdf file, will have to look at pulling the drive. Need more tools. Access behind the engine is easy. engine needs no attention. Looks like a hoist, clean bell housing well for re-seal and ujoint- bellows attachment are the tricky parts. This Will be a first time for me.
