Tilt & Trim leaking down. Why???

I have a mid 80s 60hp. Mariner, there is nothing wrong with the electric part but it leaks down . It does not leak externally so apparently the fluid is leaking back to the resevoir????? How do I fix it ? And do I need special tools ? Thanx Cooter

Cooter, I am not familar with your particular tilt/trim system, but generally leakdown is caused by a bad piston seal in the cylinder(s) or by a bad check valve on the pump. In my '77Merc (two trim cylinders, external pump), replacing the piston seal requires a special tool. I recommend you consult a manual to see if yours requires the same.
