Guys
I have an older 4 hose tilt trim setup on my outboard. It has a limit switch mounted on the starboard bracket. Inside the housing there is a kind of grease that encapsulates the switch. I am changing the switch and would like to add more of this stuff. Anyone know what this is? I assume it's some type of waterproofing. Don't think it's dielectric.. too sticky. Any help would be greatly appreciated :)

Ed, That grease is likely from greasing the trim bracket. it also may be interfering wit the operation of the switch.

if you want to replace the switch, OK, but why not just bypass it? if you trim by ear and tach/speedo settings, the switch is unnecessary.

Just connect the two wires that go to the switch together.

Re: Tilt/trim limit switch

I repaired the limit switch in my '71 Merc800 last spring. Found the same paste type grease encapsulating the switch but I cleaned everything out with varsol. I think whatever was in there originally had aged (40 yrs) and was no longer in the same state as original. The fault with my switch was the little spring had rusted away. Electrically it was still functional, but mechanically it was non-functional.

Found a perfect fit replacement spring at the local hardware store (pure luck). I lightly coated everything with a little dielectric grease, siliconed the gasket and put everything back together. Works great so far.
