Good morning all,

I just pulled the old tilt & trim motor off my boat as it was not working. Evidently a seal went bad because it was filled with nice rusty water and the insides looked like mush!

Anyway, the Merc website says a replacement is $1200?!?!...that's probably more than the boat is worth!!! So I'm looking for other options.

Motor is a 1984 Mariner 150 (model #7150725, Serial #066372xx) with the square housing

Oh, does anyone have one of the threaded engine rings for lifting the motor off the boat that they want to get rid of (or know where I can get one)?

Thanks in advance,

Bob

Do you have the part number of the T+T motor or the complete serial number for the engine?

An '85???? Well then you wouldn't think a motor that new would have these sort of problems!!! HA!!! :)

Anyway, I did look at the number stamped on the housing and it is 24289 if this is of any help...but it sounds like I might be SOL.

I'm bumping this up to see if this might be the correct after market motor. I realize the auction has ended, but I checked and was told they could order one if I could make sure is fit.

It does say it replaces the square style Eaton motor which is what I have. Anyone have any experiance/thoughts about this one?

Thanks in advance.

What about the hydraulic rams? If they got water in them, they might be trash as well and replacing the motor wont fix your problem.
Might be better just to replace the whole assembly with a used one from ebay.
I got one for my '86 I6 for $250 and it runs and looks like new.

Thanks redjmp. Funny you should mention that. I was just searching ebay and found a complete setup for sale.

I did check the cylinders though and they seem to be in good condition. We also drained the fluid and it's clean.

Why do I always have to own the model that has the different style thing that isn't made in an after market version??? It never fails!

Re: Tilt & Trim motor replacement

I have a 1985 150hp Merc Black Max and I just replaced the power trim pump motor using the OEM replacement I bought on iboats (shameless plug for iboats). It was NOT an exact fit!! The bracket that the solenoids attach to is not long enough to attach to the base of the pump body because the replacement motor is taller than the original. That being said, it works great. $125 give or take, plus shipping, under $150 as I recall.
