Hi there we are total novices when it comes to boats and engines so any help would be appreciated.
We have a johnson 90hp VRO V4 which has been running fine when we purchased the boat we noticed that one of the casings where the rams are was fairly rusted but was obviously working fine.
We took the boat out last week and everything was fine when we took it out of the water but when we got it home we were unable to tilt the engine. we took the cover off and when the key is being turned there is a clicking inside the plastic black box that is there but no squeel as usaual when the engine is in motion.
As i said the casing is rusty which has been suggested the tilt & trim motor has broken??

any ideas what to check first or if we can repair the motor if it is that?
Thanks

Re: tilt trim motor???

Replacement motors are available, perhaps aftermartket. You might look up your motor to see if it has a three wire or two wire trim motor. The troubleshooting procedures are a bit different. There should be a manual release screw, likely on the transom clamp bracket. Loosen it and the motor should tilt by hand.

You might post the year of the motor, if you need additional help.

Could be just a bad solenoid. If it goes one way and not the other then a solenoid is suspect. Need to do some electrical checks before considering a pump.
