Hi everyone, I recently replaced the tilt/trim motor in my boat and it has been working fine. Last time I took it out however it started spraying fluid and stopped working. I got it home hoping it was just one of the hoses but low n behold it was spraying out where the 2 peices connect (where the motor on the top and the peice where the hoses connect on the bottom). First thought was gasket but when I took them apart it's a metal plate between the two. below the plate there are 4 O-rings. The O-ring closest to the front is oval and was broken (which is where the fluid was leaking from). I tried to just buy a new O-ring from the hardware store but since it's oval and rather shallow it won't stay in place...Could I use make-a-gasket or a marine silcone and just make my own O-ring or can these be bought individually through somewhere?

Hey rip, you must have gotten the wrong size diameter rubber o-ring (not the circumference of the o-ring which the one you are speaking of is a 3/4") its the diameter of the body, some are 1/16th, some are 3/32nds, you need a 3/4" with a 3/32nds body. I use hardware store o-rings all the time and have never had a problem getting a good seal.

The o-ring I tried was a 3/4x(can't read it cuz i ripped the package open like a mad man)x3/32...Just wont stay in the grove...?

Put a little bellows adhesive in the groove to hold it in place.

Rip, as Ensign suggested, you may need a little adhesive to hold that o-ring in the groove, BUT use only a small amount just to hold it! I use Permatex Ultra Grey Rigid High Torque RTV silicone.
