Tilt/Trim Problem on 55hp Chrysler

I searched for tilt/trim threads but didn't come up with any I could go off of. I have a 55hp Chrysler with power tilt but it looks like I have a leak from one of the fittings. Now my question is, is there an easy way to unhook the rams so i can manually lift the engine? I read where the engine should be all the way up when adding fluid and it will only raise a couple inches via power. Also I'm assuming the little knurled knob on the side of it is where I need to fill? It is an all white unit if that helps, around a 69' to 72' model. I plan on going to the lake this weekend and would like to one way or another be able to raise the engine up all the way for obvious reasons lol.
Thanks,
Brian

When tilt rams are retracted the piston shafts displace fluid. One purpose of the reservoir is to hold this fluid. Mercury made engines had a reservoir that was smaller than the displacement and have to be filled with the system raised. Chrysler engines came with reservoir larger than displacement. You can fill either up, down, or anywhere in between if you have a 1970-1991 Force with round trim pump. I prefer to fill down because there is less chance of oil being forced into motor and softening brushes or dissolving winding glues.

if you have topped off your chrysler with either ND30 motor oil or hydraulic jack oil and it still doesn't lift all the way then it is probably a pump failure. The higher the engine lifts the greater the PSI required. If your pump can only deliver 500PSI then your engine will only lift halfway up.

Thanks, I'll try and fill it while it's down in the morning and see if that helps. If not I guess I'll be looking for a way to take it off for the weekend.

craigslist would be my first choice, then feebay. Craigslist is free and ebay+paypal is about 15%. So you can expect to pay about 15% more from ebay than direct mail-order or craigslist. That said, ebay is worldwide and craigslist is town by town so your chances of finding a system on craigslist are kind of slim.

Also, 55Hp isn't that big. It shouldn't be that much trouble to take engine off and remount with aftermarket system. Plus 55HP isn't so powerful that aftermarket would struggle with it. I bet you could find a decent aftermarket power trim (like Panther or CMC) right here on iboats for $500-$600.
