Tilt & trim problem on 90hp Yamaha

My tilt & trim has been a little noisy (squeeky actually) lately but worked perfectly. Today it hesitated to go down at first, (the motor was working) and then it lowered and raised normally a couple of times before it failed again fully raised. I checked the fluid, it was full but a little foamy. I turned the release screw to lower the motor manually then turned it back counterclockwise. Then the motor wouldn't raise, it would pull down further, but not go up. I drained it the best I could and filled it with fresh ATF and it didn't help.

I decided to remove the unit for closer inspection, and it doesn't seem to come out from between the mounts. I got the center ram and the six bolts out easily. It will raise maybe an inch or more, but not enough to come out. Will I need to remove the engine from the boat? I had removed a T&T unit from an OMC 90hp before and the Yamaha unit looked like it would come out the same way.

What should I do when (or if) I get this thing off? Should I do some further testing before
that point?

It may be unrelated, but the boat got caught in a heavy rain yesterday and the splashwell drain is located right behind the T&T unit. I plan to add one or two more and plug that one.

Oh yeah, it's an 1988 model.

From doing a search, I learned that to remove the unit I need to support the engine and remove the starboard mount completely. Why the starboard side? Am I looking at a new pump or what?

I've got a few OMC manuals from that era. Is the Yamaha unit basically the same? I did discover the manual release screw works in the opposite direction. I'm hoping that a disassembly and cleaning followed by some fresh ATF will fix it. Anybody done this recently?
