Tilt/trim problem

I've got an '80 50 hp evinrude w/ tilt. The tilt worked fine the first 5 yrs I owned it then one day it would not go down. It goes up fine. It will go down sometimes. Seems like it works best in warm weather. Often it won't work when I first get to the lake, then after the sun comes out it starts working just fine. I took the motor apart and cleaned things up(major pain). Still does the same thing.

Anyone seen this before? I hate to replace the motor it works great when it wants to. Gotta be an easy fix. Right?

Have you checked the fluid levels? Any leaks to speak of? Does the motor run, as if trying to pump, but the cylinders won't go down? Or does it just do nothing at all? Any more information you can share?

BTW........ Welcome to iBoats!!!

can you hear the motor when you press down, checked solenoid? checked for bad switch, short in wiring, dirty connections.

Re: Tilt/trim problem

When the tilt/trim won't go down, there is no motor noise. I bypassed the switch with the same result. Checked the cable for nicks and found a nicked wire. Fixed it. Still wouldn't work. That is as far as I have gotten. Most of the time it works great. But when it doesn't:mad:. Haven't checked the fluid level and actually don't know how. Any suggestions.

Thanks for the replies.

Re: Tilt/trim problem

If it will trim up fine it is not likely your oil level, although to check it there will be a fill hole with a slotted screw on the front of your resevoir which is used to fill. Trim fully out, top up, cycle it 5 to 6 times, self bleeding the system, then try re filling again while trimmed out. Continue this until you can no longer.

Regarding your issue, first check to see if your motor is in fact reversing. Other than that you will likely have an internal valve which is clogged or damaged. Hard to troubleshoot this without a factory OEM manual. That would be my first step if I were you. Check www.ebay.com or www.outboardbooks.com for a factory reprint.

What colour wires are coming off the trim motor?

if there is no motor noise i would say look and check and recheck electrical connections and selonoids.
