Tilt/Trim problem

I have a 1978 Evinrude 115 model 115899C and the power tilt/trim will go up but not down. It will go up just fine but when i hit the button to make it go down it won't go. The motor makes noise like its running and wants to go down but it won't move. The only way I can get it to go down is to use the manual release. Any help with this will be greatly appreciated.

If there is nothing restricting the path of the motor, ie trail locks, then you likely have a restriction in one of the valves. I would reccomend getting yourself a factory OEM Service Manual for that if you would like to troubleshoot yourself.

I had the same thing happen to my 77 Johnson 85HP. I ended up taking my tilt/trim motor apart and found one of the brushes had broken wires on it. I resoldered them to the brush and everything worked fine after that.
