I have been winterizing my 1992 Merc. Alpha I w/ P.S., and noticed the carpet on the starboard side aft, is becoming somewhat saturated with an oil leak. It seems natural that the trim pump is leaking, but i can't find where. Can reservoirs be replaced/bad or is this a whole pump issue? When i first got the boat (Labor day) the reservoir was dry. I filled it and it has worked fine, but now the leak. Also my trim position indicators are shot so i need to replace this winter. All at once? Are they related issues? Thanks for the great posts on winterizing, and i appreciate the help.

Re: Tilt/trim pump leak

Ayuh,.... Welcome Aboard...

The trim reservoirs are known to leak,+ Are replacable....

The trim gauge senders are not related,... They're mounted out on the drive,+ are known to have the wires corrode off...
For the amount of labor,+ Busted Fingers for fixing them,...
I learned to drive "Seat of the Pants",... No Gauge needed...

Copy that.

I'm a novice on the wrench end of boating. Is the repair to the sensors worth it? 1-10 difficulty?

Here's the instructions on how to change the senders. PS: the oem kit is around a 100 bucks.

And here is a link to the OEM service manual download. After some reading, you can determine if you have the abilities or not. If you aren't mechanically inclined, I would give the job a 12. The job includes pulling the outdrive and bellhousing it's bolted to. Some special tools requiered.

Re: Tilt/trim pump leak

ok so i think i have the leak problem figured out...the oil reservoir on my pump is missing the prescribed plug that inserts into the neck before the cap.

Thanks for the heads up on replacing the sensors!! great site and expert feedback. I'll be here all winter!

Re: Tilt/trim pump leak

Update: Tilt Pump reservoir had a crack in it that was previously "glued". Replaced it and it is now holding oil just fine. Thanks!
