Hi all, my question involves the trim pump on my 1986 Chaparral 178XL. There is no resevoir, oil is just added to the pump.

My question: It's extremely difficult to determine the oil level with the black plastic dipstick. I'm wondering how much oil the system will hold. I've added some but am still barely able to read anything on the dipstick. I don't want to overfill it.

The system seems to be working fine.

Thanks,
Brian

The boat's engine is a Mercruiser 3.0 4cyl. 1986. I do not know what type of electric motor is used for the trim system.

Hi
You probably have an oildyne trimpump, if you dont see any oil on the dipstick if you clean it and put it in the hole, there is no oil, add some and check again.
When your done its important to screw the dipstick one turn out after it bottoms in, for ventilation.
Regards
Affa
