what is the difference between tilt and trim?

i ask because i want to understand what i have, on my dash panel for controls i have 3 buttons stacked vertically and in order to tilt/trim the motor i must push and hold the center button and push either up or down for motion:confused:

does this seem the right way for the controls to work?
i know for me it is difficult to operate two buttons watch motor and still drive if lake is busy:(

if it is wrong what are my options as i am planning to reposition switch anyway(it is also behind steering wheel adding to difficult time operating it)

Re: tilt/trim question

Not to steal the thread but... i got the same question. My boat has 3 buttons:
UP - one button

(word "Trailer")

UP - On the next lower button
----
Out

(Word "Trim")

In - Last button

I can get the "In" and top "up" button to work but what is the middle button and what the differnce from trailer and trim?

Re: tilt/trim question

Tilt is to lift the engine all the way up,so tilt and trailer are actually the same function.
Trim is like a low gear so to speak,it raises the drive slow from full down or in position to the height it should trim out under way.In other words it should not lift the drive or engine too high.
I don't understand the holding two buttons for just trim, tilt maybe.
You can always change the type switch you have..

Re: tilt/trim question

Trim allows the engine to be trimmed up to a max position w/o starving the water pump and keeps the outdrive between the brackets. Tilt will allow the motor to be lifted for trailer and it is rough on the outdrive to overtrim it beyond the brackets. The torque produced can damage things.

Re: tilt/trim question

So how does that work on my merc? When I push the bottom button it goes in (down), but I have to hold down the other 2 buttons and it goes up, way up. Should I be able to hit the middle button by itself and it should only go up half way?
