Had the "up" relay stick on me today, (this happened once on the water, and a quick tap released it.. worked fine after that, put it on my "to do" list of things to take care of.).. Anyway, it now just clicks.. "down" relay works fine. So I decided to take it apart, clean the contacts, verify proper operation.. however, This is a Bosch relay, and it will NOT come apart.. I do this to automotive relays all the time, but these suckers on this engine (Force 125, '88) must be welded closed.. I would think yea, maybe they are sealed, water intrusion and all that. Anybody ever been able to disassemble one? Damn near needed stitches after the pocket screwdriver slipped trying to pry it open.

I have access to the same relay through my automotive shop, and I could just seal a new one and install it, but I am stubborn and want to clean this one up.

So save yourself the blood and stitches and go get a new one.
Shouldn't cost much just take the old one in with you so they can match it up.
Fuel leaking from carbs while the motor is tilted up gets all over them and prob. shorted it out.
Good luck though if you still plan on cleaning it up.

Realys- any will do- just match the numbers on the relay with the numbers on the realy. They are about ( from Sydney) $12.00 each, so I replaced both of mine Read my earlier post...... IS YOUR BATTERY CONNECTED??

They are made to be waterproof.
If cleaning the contacts on the outside doesn't work???
Get a new one.Actually get 2 and replace in a set.
Then you have a good spare in your boat box!!

Re: tilt/trim relays

skinny on trim relays -

some small engines use waterproof relays with an outer shell and sealing gasket. This is because it's an add-on kit and it was not certain that the relays would be inside engine cowl. This is a definite and small minority of trim relays.

most trim systems from Force, mercury, mariner, Johnson, Evinrude, volvo use a standard 5pin bosch automotive relay. It is a standard automotive relay. Some brands are sealed with glue. Pick those. the glue helps with both vibration and moisture.

the relay will have two amperages. one is for the ground and the other is for positive. In trim systems you use both but still only need 20A. Pick the one that says 30/40 and make sure your fuse or circuit breaker is working.

The cost should be under $5. I buy them in cases of 200 and the cost is under $2 each. I don't see how buying them one or two at a time should make them cost over $5. The waterproof versions with rubber gasket are much more. If that is what your boat has then maybe you should consider moving the relays to a dry location.
