Tilt/Trim reservoir question

Hi- I have a 1998 Alpha I Gen II Mercruiser outdrive and 5.7 EFI engine. I replaced the fluid reservoir on my tilt/trim motor, the reservoir is attached to the valve body with a single screw on the bottom of the reservoir.

Well the screw won't turn tight into the valve body,I think the valve body threads are worn out partially. Right now the reservoir will stay attached to the valve body, but I'm afraid with time and vibration the fluid reservoir will come loose. Should I ask my mechanic to re-dye the threads on the valve body or just replace the $290 valve body?

All trim functions work fine. I needed to replace the rotted trim pump floor bracket so I thought I would replace the fluid reservoir at the same time.

Many thanks,
Robert

Re: Tilt/Trim reservoir question

Never mind the mechanic, get a #10-32 tap (bottoming, if available) and a cheap tap handle and do it yourself.

Put some grease on the tap first, then any shavings will stick to the grease and come out when you withdraw the tap. Start it perfectly straight.

Do the threads on the screw look damaged at all?

Are you sure the screw you are using is not too long? Obvious, but thought I should ask..
