Tilt/Trim Switches worked fine 15 sec later nothing

I just got in off my boat. When I got into the slip I trimmed up the engine using the switch on my console. I immediately walked back to the outboard to put the kickstand up and when I tried to push the tilt/trim on the motor I got nothing, not even the trim motor making any noise. I went back to the console and tried that switch and that isn't working now either. There was literally seconds between trimming up at the console and walking back to find no power to the trim motor now. What could be going on? Its a 1997 Mariner 250.

Right now the motor is trimmed up just short of being able to put the kickstand up.

When I turn the key to the on position all the gauges and everything still pop on. I haven't tried starting since the water pickups are out of the water right now. If it was a solenoid would just the trim motors stop or would that knock out both the ignition and the trim?

If it's the solenoid, it will only affect the trim motor itself and should not have any effect on the ignition on the motor, but I wouldn't start that engine unless the water inlets are in the water.

Re: Tilt/Trim Switches worked fine 15 sec later nothing

I have a very similar problem occuring right now. I have 2005 9.9 mercury kicker with power trim and electronic ignition. 2 times in the past and again just yesterday, I had my kicker down running and went to turn it off and trim it up so I could move under power of my main motor and I get no response to the trim (no noise or nothing). I then tried to start the kicker back up and I get no response to the ignition (nothing). I had no choice, but, to run under power of the big motor (slowly) to get where I'm going. The I just kept trying the trim here and there with the same no response. Typically after about 30min to an hour later I'll hit the trim and it works like nothing was ever wrong? It will also start again.

Sounds like you have something similar going on? Any help would be appreciated! Let me know if you figure anything out and I'll do the same.

Thanks,
Curt

Just a guess, but I'd say the contacts on your trim solenoids are dirty or shot. Maybe even your coil is burned up. Had a problem like this with a 95 Merc.
They are inexpensive and easy to change. You may could get a few trips by cleaning them with some contact cleaner.
