I was wondering if there was someplace that rebuilds these units? or do I have to buy a new one? I know that they sell rebuildkits for them, but i can not seem to find a repair manuel for it and I am not sure about tearing it apart with out something to go by. thanx for any advice on this issue.

Better salvage yards will give you fair prices and some warranty on a used unit.

If you get a factory manual, they will cover the rebuild in it. Check ebay or outboardbooks.com.

Most starter/alternator repair shops can rebuild the motor for you, as long as it hasnt been too badly damaged by water. Call your local dealer and they will reccomend someone, as they usually send the motors out themselves.

Bill Kelly sells refurbished units at a decent price, I have ordered many off him. One of the last places to get the rebuilt 3 wire motors.

reeldutch

it works just fine as far as tilting the motor, it just leaks off after about 20min of sitting in the up postion. I have tried to bleed off the lines to make sure I did not have air in lines, but I am not sure if I am even doing that right? like I said I do not have a repair manuel for it so I have no clue as to what I am doing is either right or wrong, I had NO clue it would be this hard to get some kind of info.on this unit tho. I knew it had a problem but I had other issues with the motor so I was more worried about those issues, I sAId tilt and trim should not be that big of a deal! man was I WRONG!! I priced a rebuilt unit and at 700.00 bucks:eek: I gonna have to figure out another way to get it fixed, cause mommy (the wife) will go NUTZ if I tell her I gonna spend 700 bucks on the titl and trim. sorry did not mean to make this in to long drawn out story, I just had no clue this was gonna be such a costly issue or that I could not get a repair manuel for the dang thing.

Well in that case there is no need to buy a whole rebuilt unit. You most likely have a leak somewhere. First check the manual release to ensure that it is closed and tight.

To properly bleed the TNT unit, tilt it fully up and out, then fill the resevoir, cycle 5 to 6 times back to the fully out position, re fill, etc... until you can no longer fill it. The system is self bleeding. Let us first know if it was low. This is a parts breakdown for your system.

Thank you Chris for your reply I am here at work now but as soon as I get home I will try the bleeding again doing it the way you suggested to do it. and will report back to you my findings. is there any type of fluid I should be putting into it?

Re: Tilt&Trim unit on 83 johnson 150

If you have a Johnson/Evinrude dealer near you, get BRP's TNT fluid. Otherwise, you can pick up some ATF Dexron III pretty much anywhere. Also, does the trim and tilt leak down, or just the tilt? Look for leaks before filling, or you may get confused with fresh fluid. Look around the manual release screw, trim end caps (#25 in diagram), oil lines (#38 and 39 in diagram)

The manual release is #66 in the diagram, ensure that is closed and tight as stated, and not leaking.

For a manual, look for an OMC manual on ebay, or try outboardbooks.com for a factory reprint.

Chris
I have looked and can see no leaks of anykind on the unit, and I think they are both bleeding off tilt and the trim. I have not really got into it until this weekend and about the time I was starting to feel over my head it started to rain and hail so i just put the tools up for the day. I have a repair manuel for the motor but it has very little info. on the tilt and trim unit. I will try the bleeding once I get home and report back to you, I have called a repair shop and the guy said he could rebuild my unit for around 275.00 So if this does not work looks like I be pulling it to work with me tommorow so I can get it in the shop, spwan season is right on top of me and I need to get this boat ready for me and the grandkids! Thanx again for your advice and help it means a ton to me. I will let ya know how I do once I try this when I get home.
Thanx again

well I thought I give you a update Chris, I bleed the system like you said and it seemed to make it better, but was still leaking down. So I bit the bullet and hooked her to the back of the truck and took her to the shop this morning. I wanted to thank you for all of your advice and tips.

Im sure they will find a faulty valve or leak in a seal or o ring.

Good luck, hope the fix is a cheap one.
