Can anyone tell me which wire does what on the trim harness. Mine has red, green, purple and blue. The motor is a Mercury 1150, 1976 year.

Re: Tilt & trim wiring

Red is +12V (power), green and blue are up and down (forget which is which). The solenoid is for up, so whatever color it connects to is up. The purple is for continuity through the trim limit switch.

Function: if the trim limit switch is closed and working, pushing the middle button sends power through the trim limit switch to the solenoid primary winding, activating the up winding on the trim motor. If the trim limit switch is either open or defective, you need to push the middle and top buttons at the same time to activate trim/tilt up.

You can bypass the trim limit switch by unplugging the purple wires from the harness near the pump (bullet connectors) and installing a jumper wire.
