Tilt/Trim?

I have a 1978 85hp Evinrude...

The tilt trim does go up and down but if I go to trim up the pump runs and takes about 3 seconds or so before it starts to pump. On the down stroke it pulls the 2 smaller pistons in first then the center will go down and fall to the transom. ONce it is down it does hold and you cannot pull it up by hand...

Any ideas?

Thanks,.,.

Re: Tilt/Trim?

Hi DP..

Have your checked the fluid level in the reservoir lately? Could be low. The two shorter pistons are the trim pistons. The got more "omff" than the single tilt cylinder to trim the engine while under way. They will extend all the way out when you tilt the motor up. They go in first when tilting down. Normal operation. Check the fluid level though. Sounds low if it takes a few seconds to respond. :D

Re: Tilt/Trim?

I would say the pivot areas are binding up, due to corrosion and/or lack of lubrication. The hydraulic unit uses check valves to operate the two small pistons and the center cylinder. If the unit is not pulling the pistons in the correct order, the pivot pins and bushings are usually tight.

DPS,

Good suggestions by both OBJ and ICEMAN.

I would look at both.

Re: Tilt/Trim?

I have the same motor and have had every possible problem with the TnT system...I ended up removing the pump and checking the entire system and found I had a bad check valve...good advice
