TILT / Trim

I have a 1995 75hp mariner that is mounted on 17 foot Smoker craft. this is only the second boat that I've had that has tilt/trim. Any other boat I've driven with Tilt/trim has, what i would call a two stage tilt trim. where it will tilt quickly and when it reaches the trim it moves slowly. This mariner only goes up and down quickly. with now slower, fine-tuning operation. is there a possibility of having just a tilt or should i start looking for something that needs to be repaired.

Some of those Mercs only had a power tilt function. A quick look on the crowleymarine site shows that motor (depending on exact model) having one of 3 trim/tilt, tilt or manual tilt components. What have you got?

As others have said a single cylinder will elude to power tilt. Power tilt is made for idle speeds and contains a popoff valve. If you only have PT, if you have the engine tilted up and attempt to get on plane, the tilt pressure on the hydraulics causes the over pressure valve to open and you loose the tilt function. With the 3 cylinder system, you have tilt for low speeds and power trim for the high speeds where the water pressure on the unit is higher. PTT is pretty much a smooth steady movement from tucked in to prop ventilating. I think the transition is like 10* out from the transom is where the Trim cylinders take over.

I had tilt on a 1972 Johnson 125 before OMC came out (1973) with the Trim addition. After that, on any engine of any size, I always had PTT and wouldn't be without it.

more info on the trim tilt is that it is a 1998 75elpto with sn OG604868. i looked up parts and it only has parts for power tilt so i am going to assume there is no tilt. not a big deal as im looking at putting a manual jack plate, 4" set back and tune from there. but, the first thing i have to do is get the interior back into it. Detroit river fun will be here before you know it.

I believe your motor has power trim and tilt !!

my 40 just has one piston, i think they used that design up to the 75.
Is it not trimming under load for you?

The inline ( newer ) 4 cylinder 125 HP also used a system with 1 cylinder.

If model and serial number are correct, this should be the PTT unit for your motor. An owner's manual or service manual will tell you if it is power trim, tilt or both.

I thought you had that motor? should only be a single cylindr unit.

last year when i had it on the water it would tilt it up and down but when it was down it didnt change to the slower, finer trim adjustment to dial in a smooth plane at full speed. thats the reason i ask.

the single cylinder units are pretty quick.

If it has power trim it can "tilt". Tilt is specified separately because some engines have/had only that option (I did on my 1972 Johnson 125) and the tilt doesn't have enough pressure to work at higher speeds where the force against the lower unit is too great for it's available pressure. Trim does it all.

Johnson / Evinrude offered TILT ONLY for many years.----And 1960 / 70's were a different age.------I do not believe Mercury ever offered TILT ONLY on their bigger motors.
