tilt/trim

I have a 1986 Evinrude 175XP and the trim is not working properly. When I try to lower the motor from the full up position the trim arms lower before the motor reaches them, making the tilt arm the only thing controlling the motor's position. The trim arms do operate both up and down, but are out of position before the motor reaches them. Is this a bad sender or crossed wire? The fluid level is fine and was just topped off and bled over the weekend. Thanks in advance for any advice.

Re: tilt/trim

Jax.... The engine lowers via gravity in conjunction with the PTT. The problem is that the large nuts that retain the steering tube are too tight at the moment and the tilting area there needs greasing via the grease fittings..

As it stands, the tension on the swivel bracket is so tight that the engine will not fall by itself, and will not go down until the trim rams drag it down.

Loosen one nut 1/2 to 1 turn. With a 2x4 and a heavy hammer, tap the swivel bracket (the bkt between the two transom brackets) to one side, then the other. Grease the fittings. If necessary, remove the grease fittings, clean out any debris, reinstall the fittings, then grease.

That should cure your problem.
